In a method and a device for machining the edges of metal sheets or sheet metal strips by means of cutting elements arranged on rotating, spherical milling tools, in order to increase the feed rate and to reduce the vibrations of the sheet metal strip, the part of a workpiece (sheet metal strip) that is to be worked in each case is guided by pressing means and deflecting means on engagement of the cutting elements in said workpiece, while retaining a large cutting depth, thickness of cut, cutting rate and the same or smaller milling diameter, in such a way that said part describes a path in an annular cut-out section that approximates to the circular arc movement of the milling knife (cutting element). The arrangement according to the invention results in a small, acute angle of engagement gamma , a high intrinsic rigidity of the sheet metal strip in the machining region, and a very large engagement length, compared to conventional processes, between the point of engagement and point of disengagement of the cutting elements, with the result that the feed rate can be substantially increased. <IMAGE>
