PURPOSE:A novel type of graft polymer in which epsilon-caprolacton is polymerized by ring opening onto cellulose ester to form graft chains of ester linkages, thus being suitably used as a coating resin or a molding material of high toughness and flexibility. CONSTITUTION:The objective graft polymer has a recurring unit of formula I [at least one of R1-R8 is -(COCH2CH2CH2CH2CH2O)m-H (m is 1 or more) and at least one of the rest is -COCnH2n+1 (n is 1 or more) and the rests are H] or a combination thereof with formula II [at least one of R4-R6 is -COCpH2p+1 (p is 1 or more) and the rests are H]. For example, the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-carolacton is carried out using a catalyst such as an organotitanium compound in the presence of an ester from an aliphatic carboxylic acid and cellulose such as cellulose acetate at 120-230 deg.C for 0.1-96hr to give the objective polymer.
