Electrically conducting and non-conducting 3,4-disubstituted polypyrroles of the formulae: <IMAGE> (I) wherein: n is a positive integer greater than 4; R1 and R2 may be the same or different, provided that (1) when R1 and R2 are different, one of R1 and R2 is CH3 and the other of R1 and R2 is -COOR3 or -COCH3, wherein R3 is CH3, C2H5, C3H7 or t-C4H9; and (2) when R1 and R2 are the same they are C3H7, C4H9, C5H11 or C6H13; and electrically conducting salts thereof having the formula: <IMAGE> (II) wherein: n, R1, R2 and R3 have the above meanings, X is an anion, and Z is a number from about 3 to about 4.
