The melt-spinnable aromatic polyesters, which are present as liquid crystals and which are optically anisotropic in the molten phase, comprise recurrent molecule moieties of the formula I and II <IMAGE> and <IMAGE> and recurrent molecule moieties of the formulae III and IV <IMAGE> and where IV is <IMAGE> where R is CH3. The polyesters according to the invention are cheap and furthermore exhibit completely satisfactory rigidity, toughness and strength.
