A method and appts. are claimed for electroslag welding build-up of cylindrical elements, e.g. mill rolls, in which polyphase current is supplied to consumable electrodes(12) provided around a roll (10). Electrode sizes and numbers are such that the roll and mould(17) distance for the electrode is within 30 mm and the combined electrode width is at least 10% of the mold circumference, e.g. for 100mm build-up of a 100mm dia. roll, there are 6 electrodes at least 40mm thick and 50mm wide. During buildup, molten metal(13) from a separate source and suitably of the same compsn. as the electrodes is added to the molten padding pool at a rate, e.g. 5-30 kg/min.
