PURPOSE:To obtain a modified polyester of both good formability and color tone dyeable with basic dye, by incorporating the reaction system with a combination of metal sulfonate group-contg. isophthalic acid and alkali (alkaline earth) metal compound so that the electrical conductance ratio specifically defined falling between specified value. CONSTITUTION:In manufacturing the objective polyester polycondensation, in the presence of a catalyst such as tetraalkyl titanate, of an oligomer prepared by the reaction between a difunctional carboxylic acid consisting mainly of terephthalic acid and at least one sort of glycol, before completion of said polycondensation, (A) a metal sulfonate group-contg, isophthalic acid and (B) an alkali (alkaline earth) metal compound (carbonate or acetate being effective) are incorporated in the reaction system so that the electrical conductance ratio R=R1/R0 [R0 is the value at ordinary temperatures of the ethylene glycol solution of the component (A); R1 is the value of the solution which is made by adding the component (B) to said ethylene glycol solution, refluxing for 3hr while heating, then cooling to odrinary temperatures] falling between 0.95 and 1.05.
