NEW MATERIAL:A 3,4-dihydroxybenzoylcholine halide shown by the formula (X is halogen). EXAMPLE:3,4-Dihydroxybenzoylcholine iodide. USE:A synthetic substrate for measuring cholinesterase (enzyme code number 3.1.1.8). PREPARATION:3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid is used as a starting raw material, 3,4- dihydroxy group is subjected to carbobenzoxy protection by the use of carbobenzoxy chloride, the resultant substance is made into an acid chloride by an ordinary method in chemical synthesis by the use of SOCl2, P2O5, etc. The acid chloride is condensed through dehydrochlorination with N,N-dimethylaminoethanol, then catalytically reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as Pd-C, etc. to eliminate the protecting group, so that N,N-dimethylaminoethyl 3,4- dihydroxybenzoate is obtained. It is quaternized with a methyl halide to give a compound shown by the formula.
