PURPOSE:To effectively and high-responsively restrain knocking, by rapidly delivering control signals having suitable values necessary for restraining knocking, upon occurrence of knocking to restrain knocking, and as well by carrying out compensating control corresponding to variations therein particularly upon transient operation. CONSTITUTION:Upon steady state operation of an engine A pressure sensor 8 detects the internal pressure of an intake-air pipe which is sensitive to the load of the engine, and an acceleration sensor 6 detects the vibrational acceleration of the engine. Further, a knocking detector 7 sorts and issues knocking signals having a level proportional to the strength of knocking, which are therefore delivered to a computer 11. The computer 11 obtains the rotational speed of the engine from a circuit 10 and a load condition in view of the internal pressure to determine the operating condition of the engine, and as well the knocking signals are stored in a memory 12 so that control is made in accordance with the knocking signals. Upon transient a variation in the opening degree of a throttle valve 14 is taken out as a variation in resistance value of a variable resistor 15, and is delivered to the computer 11. When the variation rate exceeds a predetermined value, a transient condition is determined so that the compensation of the control signal is made only for a certain period in accordance with the variation rate.
