PURPOSE:To enable the production of a high-quality single crystal free from voids and crystal cracks, by stopping the shift of the molten zone of the raw material rod for a proper interval during the growth of the single crystal in the floating-zone melting method, thereby promoting the removal of bubbles generated in the molten zone. CONSTITUTION:A beryl single crystal is produced by floating-zone melting process, by mixing powder of BeO, Al2O3 and SiO2 at specific ratios, pressing and sintering the mixture to obtain a raw material rod, and locally melting the rod by the concentrated infrared heating. During the growth of the beryl single crystal, the movement of the molten zone of the raw material rod is stopped several times, or only once for a definite time interval. The bubbles generated in the molten zone are removed during the stop stage. A beryl single crystal free from bubbles nor the cracks caused by bubles, and having excellent quality can be produced in high reproducibility. |
