PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield and quality, in a short time, by reacting fumaric acid with excess isopropyl alcohol under specific high temperature and pressure condition while removing the by-produced water as an azeotropic mixture by refluxing. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by reacting fumaric acid with excess isopropyl alcohol in an inert gas atmosphere at 120-180 deg.C under pressure in the presence of an esterification catalyst [preferably an aromatic sulfonic acid such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. for the convenience of handling; 0.1-10pts.(wt.), especially 1-5pts. per 100pts. of fumaric acid], under reflux. The amount of isopropyl alcohol is preferably 250-600pts. per 100pts. of fumaric acid. The above reaction can be carried out in an organic solvent such as n- hexane, octane, etc. |
