PURPOSE:To recognize a pattern with a high recognition ratio without an increase in the number of dictionaries by registering the variance showing fluctuation of the feature quantity at the time of generating a dictionary and by recognizing a pattern. CONSTITUTION:A variance sigmai of the feature quantity is registered in a dictionary of a pattern recognizer as well as a feature quantity di. Prior to the distance arithmetic of an input pattern and a dictionary, whether the variance sigmai is equal to a threshold TH1 or larger is checked, and when the variance sigmai is below the threshold TH1, the processing is carried out. When the variance sigmai is larger than the threshold TH1, whether or not an i-component Pi of an input pattern corresponding to an i-component di of the dictionary exists is investigated. When it does not exist, it is rejected, and when it exists, the number of the i is increased by one and the operation is started again.
