PURPOSE:To perform accurate and speedy still picture reproduction, and to improve the operability, simplify the constitution, and to reduce the cost by sectioning phase relation into specific areas and storing corresponding motor control information in the areas, judging which area the phase relation corresponds to during variable speed reproduction, and driving a motor for driving a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A still picture command signal S12 from a key matrix circuit 37 falls to a low level at the time of a change from a normal reproduction mode to a still reproduction mode, and still picture processing is performed. Then, the common terminal (c) of switch circuits 42 and 43 is switched from a normally close terminal (b) to a normally open terminal (a). Then, a capstan computer 31 is switched from the state wherein it is controlled by a normal capstan servo part 44 to the state wherein it is controlled with a drive output signal S13 and a run-direction output signal S14 outputted by the output circuit 41 of a microcomputer 31.
