PURPOSE:To improve the fitting accuracy of the substrate of a magnetic head and, at the same time, to surely and easily fit an insulating layer, etc., to the substrate, by using a material which is good in conductivity and excellent in machinability for making the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A good-conductivity and high-machinability material of metal, alloy, carbon, or graphite, desirably a ferromagnetic alloy, such as Ni, Ni alloy, Fe alloy, etc., is used for making a substrate 2. An insulating layer 3 is formed by depositing a material, such as SiO, SiO2, Al2O3, etc., on the whole surface of one end face or almost whole surface of the end face except edge section of the four sides of the substrate 2. Then a magnetic reluctance element 4 is formed by depositing its material on the layer 3 after performing appropriate masking or by numerically controlled scribing method or numerically controlled scanning method after depositing its material on almost entire surface of the insulating layer 3. A protective film 5 is formed by depositing a material, such as SiO, SiO2, Al2O3, etc., on the surface of the insulating layer 3 and magnetic reluctance element 4 except the terminal sections 4a and 4c of the element 4.
