The method is intended for applying a sealing closure in the end of a pipe or in a wall opening or the like by inserting two axially spaced elements of which at least one is expandable. A foamable fire retardant material is introduced in the space between the elements. - At least the element at the end of the pipe or opening is preferably formed by inserting a disc of resilient foam material between a metal disc fixed to, and a metal disc movable on a spacer rod . The other element may comprise a plastics disc slidable in the pipe and fixed to the rod via a metal disc and screw nut.
