PURPOSE:To manufacture a heat insulating material for piping, easily applicable even to complicated tools, etc. with little danger without corroding the piping, and having sufficient heat insulating effect, by applying an expandable sheetlike or puttylike phenolic resin to the piping, and expanding the resin. CONSTITUTION:An expandable phenolic resin (novolak type) is formed into a sheet having 0.1-50mm. thickness on a sheet of kraft paper 3 by rubber rolls, and steam piping 1 in use is covered with the resultant sheet at about 2-3cm gap to bond joints of the sheet with a gum tape. The sheet is then expanded with the steam heat to form a heat insulating material consisting of the phenolic resin foam. Alternatively, the expandable phenolic resin 5 in the form of string is wrapped around the piping part of the piping 1 covered with a glass wool heat isulating material 4, and the surface is covered with the sheet of kraft paper 3. A cellophane tape is applied to the joints to form the aimed heat insulating material 6 from the foam on the gap part around a flange 2.
