<p>METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RETHREADING TUBULAR MEMBERS AND RESULTING PRODUCT A method and apparatus is disclosed for rethreading damaged or incorrectly threaded tubulor members such as tool joints, casing, and tubing for oil wells, which methods and apparatus are particularly advantageous for use with NC and CNC machines. A standard numerical production program of the machining system is operated to form a standard acceptable thread and sealing surface for a tubular blank member. A threaded adapter is placed on the newly formed threads. The adapter has an alignment mechanism. A preprogrammed position in the machining system advances the turret toward the adapter to a preprogrammed stopping point. A sliding locator assembly is moved into aligning engagement with the adapter. The locator assembly is locked in the turret while engaged in the adapter. The program in the machine system is then operated to withdraw the turret and locator assembly from the adapter. The standard threaded blank is removed from the collet and a tubular piece to be rethreaded is positioned loosely therein. The adapter is threaded onto the tubular piece. The spindle is aligned radially with a fixed position on the machine. The program system moves the turret to the preprogrammed stopping point. The tubular piece and adapter are moved until the adapter engages the locator assembly and the tubular piece is then locked in the collet. The turret moves to disengage the locator assembly from the adapter and the adapter is then removed. A rework program in the machine system forms a standard thread and seal surface on the tubular piece a desired distance into the piece further than the production program which distance is some multiple of the width of one standard thread.</p> |
