PURPOSE:To provide a color photosensitive material superior in storage stability, and capable of forming an image superior in image quality, such as sensitivity or sharpness, graininess, and color reproducibility, by using a chemically stable compd. capable of releasing a photographically useful group in a controlled manner. CONSTITUTION:A compd. contained in a silver halide color photosensitive material can couple with the oxidation product of a developing agent to release another compd. and further, it can cause oxidation reduction reaction with said product to release a photographically useful group. A preferable coupler to be used here is represented by a general formula I in which A is a group releasing RED-PUG after the coupling reaction with the oxidation product of a developing agent; RED is a group releasing PUG after oxidation reduction reaction with said product, and RED is, preferably, hydroquinones, catechols, and bisphenols; and PUG is a group substantially executing photographic action after the cleavage of the bond with RED, and groups rpresented by PUG are such as a development inhibitor, a development accelerator, a foggant, a competitive compd. (scavenger of the oxidation product of a developing agent), etc.
