A roll for a coating arrangement or paper calender, which roll has a rotating roll shell 20 and a fixed core 30 extending through the former. An intermediate space 31 between them has been divided by a plurality of circumferential seals 32 into multiple annular chambers 31a, 31b ..., 31n. A flow of liquid can be conducted through each of the said individual annular chambers. The temperature of each of the said annular chambers can be separately regulated. Thus the roll shell 20 can be heated zone by zone, so that the outside diameter thereof can be influenced zone by zone. Circumferential seals 32 are moveable in the axis of the roll relative to the core 30 and have been made from metal rings, the outside diameter of which is only slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the roll shell 20.
