In a device wherein a gas is treated with a liquid the gas stream entering the device is divided into two streams, one of which passes through apertures 15 (Fig. 1), in the bottom of a contact chamber 2 directly into the contact chamber while the other passes through holes 16 in a conduit 12 dipping at its lower end into a body of liquid in a sump 9 and opening at its upper end into the contact chamber 2, the stream of gas entering the conduit 12 entrains liquid from the sump in an amount sufficient for treatment of the whole gas stream which passes upwardly through filter pads 3 and 4 to a gas outlet 6. The contact chamber 2 is surrounded by an outer cylinder 1 and forms therewith an annular passage 8 into which liquid can drain from the filter pads 3 and 4 to be returned by a pipe 11 to the sump 9. The amount of liquid entrained by the stream of gas entering the conduit 12 may be controlled by metering the amount of liquid entering the conduit from the sump by closing the bottom of the conduit with an orificed plate or surrounding the lower end of the conduit with a chamber to which liquid is admitted through an orifice. In further modifications a chamber surrounding the lower end of the conduit 12 is supplied with liquid through an end of a flexible tube carried by a float or has an orifice for admission of liquid controlled by a valve member actuated by a bellows responsive to the temperature of the liquid in the sump. The conduit 12 may consist of an upper tube 18 (Fig. 5), and a lower concentric tube 19 of smaller diameter attached by straps 17 to the upper tube. The liquid in the sump may be oil or water.
