The ballast for a marine vessel has a central conduit (21) which extends along a part of the length of the vessel. Ballast reservoirs (24) adjacent to the central conduit are positioned so that their lower faces are below the lower edge of the conduit. - Pumps pass fluid into and out of the central conduit. A valve is positioned between each reservoir and the central conduit, to control the emptying and filling. The valves are actuated by a remote control.
