A process for the manufacture of hydroperoxides of terpene hydrocarbons, e.g. p-methane, comprises the steps of oxidising the hydrocarbon up to a hydroperoxide concentration of about 5-10% with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen, rapidly and thoroughly mixing the resulting hydroperoxide solution with a dilute aqueous solution or alcoholic suspension of a hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and forming an upper layer consisting of hydroperoxide and hydrocarbon and a lower layer which contains some hdyroperoxide and hydrocarbon, decanting the upper layer and washing it with water, methanol, glycol, or other suitable washing liquid, and feeding the lower layer back to the alkali washing process. A solution of pure hydroperoxide is obtained. This solution may be submitted to further oxidation in one or more stages, in which the same procedure is followed, until a solution containing up to 30% of hydroperoxide is obtained. The oxidation may be carried out with air or oxygen, if desired with addition of ozone, at temperatures of 100 DEG -140 DEG C. and at pressures from 1-10 atmospheres. The alkali washing may be p carried out in a centrifugal or turbulence pump so as to reduce the treatment time to less than 5 seconds. The process may be carried out in continuous fashion, and the solution of hydroperoxide may be concentrated by evaporating the hydrocarbon solvent. |
