An apparatus for cutting glass sheets shifts the cutting tool into light engagement with the glass under gradually applied pressure before applying full cutting pressure. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 9, low pressure air from a compressed air source 186 is admitted at a limited rate by valve VI to the cylinder C to eliminate slack in the cutter D operating on glass sheet 10. After a 2 second delay low pressure air is freely applied by valve V5 to cutting cylinder C to produce cutting pressure and simultaneously high pressure air is applied by valve V7 to the propulsion motor B to propel the trolley 38. The trolley moves across glass 10 and at the finish of the cutting stroke valve V3 applies air pressure which retracts cutter D to non-cutting position. The two second delay on admitting propulsion air pressure to the propulsion motor B allows the cutter cylinder C to establish full stabilised contact between D and glass 10 before starting trolley 38 on the cutting stroke. The return stroke is produced by air pressure through reversing valve V9. The valves are operated by coils E controlled through an electrical system.
