In the case of a vacuum switch having pot-shaped contact pieces which can move relative to one another and have oblique slots which are arranged in opposite directions in their web region, the one contact piece (60) is constructed with an edge (68) which springs in and the other contact body (10) is constructed with an edge (18) which springs out, the internal diameter of the web region (66) of the contact piece having a springing-in edge being equal to or greater than the diameter of the web region (60) of the contact piece having a springing-out edge. The segments, formed by the slots, in the web regions of the one contact piece are radially offset with respect to those of the other contact piece. In this way, current paths in the form of loops are formed in the contact pieces themselves, which current paths produce an essentially axial magnetic field. These magnetic fields keep the arc diffuse, even in the area of high switching-off currents. <IMAGE>
