The invention relates to a stepladder consisting of two ladder parts, with a tool shelf, in which the ladder parts in each case have two uprights interconnected via rungs or steps and are interconnected so as to be pivotable to a limited extent by means of joints in the region above the uppermost rungs or steps and can be adjusted into a predetermined spread position and a storage position, the uprights of the ladder parts lying on top of of one another parallel to one another in the storage position. The mounting of an easily accessible shelf without impairing the pivoting movement of the ladder parts and the compactness of the stepladder in the storage position is achieved by the shelf being arranged in the region of the upper ends of the two ladder parts between the upright ends and/or the uppermost rungs or steps and being connected to the ladder parts and by the shelf being dimensioned in such a manner that in the storage position of the ladder parts it does not project beyond the mutually turned away outer sides of the uprights, which run parallel to the rungs or steps.
