NEW MATERIAL:A compound consisting of a helical type polypeptide carrying porphyrin. USE:A liquid crystal display material and optical recording material. PREPARATION:For example, a helical type polypeptide, e.g. poly-L-glutamic acid, is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, and a porphyrin having functional group, e.g. p-hydroxytetraphenylporphyrin, is added to the solution. The resultant solution is then cooled to about -10 deg.C, and a coupling agent, e.g. dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, is added to the cooled solution. The temperature of the resultant solution is then returned to room temperature, and reaction is carried out. After completing the reaction, the formed dicyclohexylurea is removed, and the solvent is evaporated. The resultant dry solid is dissolved in ethanol, and the solution is filtered to remove the unreacted polymer. The resultant filtrate is added to petroleum ether and precipitated to afford the aimed novel polypeptide.
