<p>PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound by the selective alkylation of the ortho-position of a phenolic compound having at least one H atom at the ortho- position, using a catalyst prepared by adding a Zr compound such as tetraalkyl zirconium, etc. to alumina or silica. CONSTITUTION:An o-alkylphenol (e.g. 2-t-butylphenol) can be produced by alkylating the ortho-position of a phenolic compound (e.g. phenol) having at least one H atom at the ortho-position with an olefin (e.g. isobutene) in the presence of a catalyst prepared by adding a zirconium compound of formula ZrR4 (four R's are selected independently from the group of Cl, Br, I, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, aryl, and aryloxy) (e.g. zirconium tetrachloride) to alumina or silica. EFFECT:The catalyst can be used repeatedly. USE:Raw material of synthetic resin, insecticide, perfume, agricultural chemicals, antioxidant, etc.</p> |
