<p>The apparatus comprises a member movable by a user against a variable load and means signalling to an output device the magnitude of the load and the speed of the movable member. An exercise cycle embodiment has a band brake acting on a wheel driven by the user. A handle 44 is provided for adjusting the tension in the brake band and a potentiometer 53 provides an electrical signal representing the force exerted by the user. A transducer provides a signal representing the speed at which the braked wheel is driven by the user.
