PURPOSE:To make pictures of an electronic viewfinder easy to see at all times and to reduce power consumption by controlling the brightness of the picture in the electronic viewfinder. CONSTITUTION:When taking a picture while bringing an eye close to an eye cap 20, the image taken by a photographic lens 11 is converted to video signals by an image pickup tube 12 and a signal processing circuit 13 and supplied to an electronic viewfinder 14. At this time, a photoelectric element 15 is not struck by external light as the eye is brought close to the eye cap 20, and the output current of the photoelectric element becomes small, and the brightness of the electronic viewfinder 14 is controlled by a brightness controlling circuit to become low, and power consumed by the electronic viewfiner becomes small. When the electronic viewfinder 14 is looked directly, without passing through a magnifying lens 21, or when photographing with the eye cap pushing up the eye cap 20 and keeping the eye off from the eye cap, the output current of the photoelectric element 15 increases according to the quantity of light due to direct entrance of external light to the photoelectric element 15. The brightness of the electronic viewfinder 14 is raised by the brightness controlling circuit 16, and displayed picture can be made easy to see.
