PURPOSE:To obtain an alkylstyrene monomer without forming insoluble gels in polymerization, by treating an alkylstyrene with activated carbon to remove divinyl compounds contained therein. CONSTITUTION:An alkylstyrene expressed by formula II (R is lower alkyl) containing a very small amount of divinyl compounds expressed by formula I (R1- R3 are H or lower alkyl) is treated with activated carbon to remove the compounds expressed by formula I . Activated carbon derived from charcoal, cocount shell coal or coal as a raw material or carbon black or channel black, etc. is widely used as the above-mentioned activated carbon black. In treating a large amount of solution industrially, granular coal is packed in a packed column, and the solutions are preferably passed through and brought into contact with the activated carbon layer at 0.1-5 liquid space velocity. The activated carbon free of adsorptivity can be reactivated by steaming at high temperatures, etc. for reuse.
