A device for applying the sand coating to tennis courts is proposed, the sand being arranged in a downwardly tapering storage container with a trough-shaped extension on a self-propelled vehicle. The sand falls through one or more openings onto at least one rotating scattering plate and is thrown radially outwards. For supplying the sand from the trough-shaped extension to the storage container and the outlet openings, there is provided in the likewise tapering part of the extension an essentially horizontally arranged worm conveyor. In order to prevent clumping and compacting of the sand, the storage container and its extension have a depth which is small in comparison to its width. To reduce the width of the vehicle, the wheels are arranged essentially inside the lateral limit line of the storage container. As a result, the vehicle remains movable and can easily be brought through narrow openings onto the tennis court.
