PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a drug, etc. in high yield, by reacting glycine with formaldehyde in the presence of a culture solution of a bacterium belonging to the genus Escherichia, capable of producing serine hydroxymethyltransferase. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a culture solution of a bacterium [e.g., Escherichia coli MT-10350(FERM P-7437), etc.] belonging to the genus Escherichia, capable of producing serine hydroxymethyltransferase, but not capable of producing L-serine from glycine alone, its mold or an enzymatically treated material of it, glycine is reacted with formaldehyde in a system containing glycine and formaldehyde while keeping formaldehyde concentration in the reaction system at <=20mM, to give L-serine. |
