The mechanism is intended for locally softening one or more plastic sheets or foils by hf heating followed by solidification to produce welds or impressed relief. It comprises one or more pairs of facing electrodes and a support for the material which forms one of the electrodes. The or each other electrode is movable relative to the support which has an electrically conducting portion followed by a non-conducting portion. The sheet(s) may rest on an endless belt driven to move over the support at the same speed as that of the electrode(s) which may be arranged at the outer surface of a rotating drum or in or on a further endless belt.
