PURPOSE:To enable instantaneous pattern recognition by constituting a pattern detecting part of an optical fiber, an optical system and a photoelectric conversion device in a matrix and by inputting an object pattern by scanning at a time. CONSTITUTION:An object A to be recognized is detected by a detecting part (a) consisting of a lens group 7, an optical fiber bundle and an O/E convertor 9. The detected analog signal is converted into a digital signal by an A/D convertor 10, binary-coded by a binary circuit 11, and stored temporarily in a register 12. Then an output of the register 12 is addressed in a memory 13 by a control circuit 14; therefore a content A of the memory 13 can be instantaneously read out.
