A superconductor (10; 40) consisting of an outer jacket or of a coolant housing (12; 42) for holding a large number of superconducting elements (14; 44). The housing (12; 42) has two elongated, relatively hard, strong and dimensionally stable housing parts (16, 18; 46, 48) which are welded to one another (welding seam 20 or 54 respectively) along their mutually abutting or mutually adjacent longitudinal sides, forming a strong and dimensionally stable tabular coolant housing (12; 42) for the superconducting elements (14, 44). The housing parts (16, 18; 46, 48) can be formed by a channel-like profile (16) having an essentially U-shaped cross-section and having a strip profile (18) for closing the open side of the channel-like profile (16), or from a pair of angled profiles (46, 48) which each have an approximately L-shaped cross-section. <IMAGE>
