The invention relates to a heat exchanger for exchanging heat between gas flows, having two tubular containers (1, 2), which are arranged vertically above one another and through each of which the gas to be cooled or to be warmed flows from the bottom to the top and which contain solid particles (8) which move through the containers (1, 2) opposite to the gas flows from the top to the bottom, there being arranged between the containers a lock (3) through which the solid particles (8) pass from the upper container (1) into the lower container (2), and a transport device (10) is provided which feeds the solid particles back into the upper container (1) after they have traversed both containers (1, 2). In order to reduce the flow resistances in such a heat exchanger for the throughput of very large quantities of gas, the invention proposes that the solid particles (8) move through the two containers (1, 2) in free fall. <IMAGE>
