PURPOSE:To provide a herbicide containing at least one compound selected from an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid and its functional salt as an active component, exhibiting excellent herbicidal activity by the soil treatment after or before sprouting, and effective especially to broad-leaved weeds. CONSTITUTION:The objective herbicide contains, as an active component, at least one compound selected from an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid of formula [R<1> is H, halogen, cyano, nitro, OR<9> (R<9> is H, 1-16C acyl, 1-15C hydrocarbon group, etc.), SR<9>, etc.; R<2>-R<7> are H, halogen, cyano, nitro, lower alkyl, etc.; R<8> is OR<12> (R<12> is H or 1-15C hydrocarbon group which may contain O), SR<12>, etc.; m is 0-15; n is 0-10] and its functional salt, e.g. ethylamine salt. It is used in the form of granule, wettable powder, etc. containing usually 0.1-95wt% active component.
