PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having good running stability and excellent durability by using alkyl ester of salicylic acid as a lubricating agent. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer contains the alkyl ester of salicylic acid expressed by the formula I . In the formula I , R denotes an alkyl group having 1-30C. Since the alkyl ester of salicylic acid has a benzene ring, alkyl group and hydrogen group in the molecule, said ester has good compatibility and affinity with any of the inorg. material such as magnetic powder in a magnetic layer and binder, etc. as compared with a conventional lubricating agent such as fatty acid ester, silicone oil, and is liable to exist uniformly in the magnetic layer. Although said lubricating agent has an active hydroxyl group with inorg. material, said agent forms the hydrogen bond in molecule of the 6-membered ring and therefore the polarity of the hydroxyl group is moderately relieved and strong adsorption of magnetic powder as with the conventional higher fatty acid is obviated. The adequate lubricating effect is thus provided permanently. |
