PURPOSE:To eliminate influence of the thickness of patterns without increasing the capacity of a memory by binarizing an input pattern to white parts and black parts and registering a pattern, which is obtained by subjecting these white and black parts to line narrowing processings, as a dictionary. CONSTITUTION:The pattern inputted by photoelectric conversion is binarized by a binarizing circuit 1, and the width of lines constituting the pattern is detected by a frame detecting circuit 2, and a frame which is the area to be subjected to line narrowing is corrected as required. A black line narrowing circuit 3 and a white part line narrowing circuit 4 subject black and white parts of the binarized pattern to line narrowing processing respectively, and the processed pattern is registered as a standard pattern in a dictionary 6. When an unknown pattern is inputted, frame correction of the pattern and line narrowing processing are performed, and matching operation is executed by a matching circuit 5. |
