In order to detect the presence or absence of water at a predetermined level 41 in the tub 10 of a washing machine, there is provided an element 28 such as a thermistor, sensitive to temperature, which is heated such that its temperature is higher in the absence than in the presence of water. This element is disposed in a housing 18, 24 in a location where it is protected from water splashes resulting from the filling and/or rotating of the drum in the tub. If the element is a thermistor, the latter can be used after filling the tub of the washing machine for measuring the temperature of the water. <IMAGE>
