The invention relates to a series regulator with a series transistor (T) and a regulating stage (RS) for maintaining a predetermined output voltage (UA) across an external load resistance (RL). The series regulator exhibits current limiting which, from a limit current through the series transistor (T), reduces the current by current regulation when the load resistance (RL) becomes less, and greatly increases the voltage at a gate (G) of the series transistor (T) by voltage regulation when the drain-source voltage drops. <IMAGE>
