A method of purifying cooling water used in nuclear reactors, which comprises contacting said cooling water with a hydrotalcite compound of the following formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="9" wi="65" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein M<Sup>2+</Sup> represents a divalent metal cation, M<Sup>3</Sup>" represents a trivalent metal cation, A<Sup>n-</Sup> represents an anion having a valence of n, and x and m satisfy the following expessions<MathDetails id="matha01"><MathText><![CDATA[ <img id="ia02" file="imga0002.tif" wi="28" he="10" img-content="math" img-format="tif" inline="no" /> ]]></MathText></MathDetails>or a calcined product thereof obtained by calcination at a temperature of up to about 900°C; and a purifying agent used therefor.
