PURPOSE:To add a printer function to a copying machine without making it large-sized by arranging a liquid crystal panel on the scan face of a platen cover and forming a visible image on the liquid crystal panel when a printer is used and using the exposure process of the copying machine to copy this visible image. CONSTITUTION:When the copying machine is used as the printer, it is detected by an original sensor 28 and a platen open sensor 29 that an original is not placed on a platen and a platen cover 12 is closed. On the basis of detection results, a control part 23 drives a cover lock part 35 to lock the platen cover 12 so that it cannot be opened and closed. Next, the control part 23 lights a printer mode lamp on a display part 31. Picture information which is transferred from an external device 34 and is stored in a picture memory 23f in the control part 23 is displayed as a picture on a liquid crystal panel 13 through a display driving part 27. Thus, the state when an original is placed on a platen 11 in the copying machine mode is set equivalently.
