PURPOSE:To perform efficiently surface polishing of many kinds of metals by impressing alternately positive and negative voltages between a metal to be polished immersed in an electropolishing liquid and an insoluble counter electrode and changing the frequency thereof. CONSTITUTION:A metal to be treated such as Al, stainless steel, iron, steel, copper alloy or the like and a counter electrode consisting of an insoluble electrode are immersed in an acidic or basic electrolyte. The current inverting electrolysis wherein positive and negative voltages are impressed alternately between the metal to be treated and the counter electrode is accomplished. The frequency of the current is changed at the same instant, by which the surface of the metal to be treated is electrochemically dissolved and the smooth surface having gloss is obtd. As a result the smooth specular surface is obtd. even with the low concn. of the polishing soln. and low bath temp. and the polishing cost is considerably reduced.
