PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing a blowing agent for rubber and synthetic resins by easy reaction control in high quality and in high yield, by reacting diphenyl oxide with sulfuric acid, further with phosphorus oxychloride. CONSTITUTION:Diphenyl oxide is reacted with sulfuric acid, further with phosphorus oxychloride, to give P,P'-oxybis(benzenesulfonyl chloride). For example, diphenyl oxide is sulfonated with sulfuric acid according to the reaction formula. An equilibrium state is attained by formation of water as a by-product. If water as the by-product is removed from the system, side reactions will not occur and the reaction is advanced quantitatively. The reaction system is returned to a normal pressure system, phosphorus oxychloride is added to the reaction system, and chlorination is carried out under reflux by heating. By this method, neither problem of viscosity which happens in low-temperature reaction nor problem of cooling occurs. Characteristically waste liquor treatment is carried out extremely easily by this method.
