PURPOSE:To attain accurate segmentation of a character even if the character pitch and its size are irregular by segmenting the character at a position representing a detected minimum value. CONSTITUTION:A minimum value detecting section 8 detects a minimum value from a calculated minimum value detecting range so as to segment a character end point and its value is stored in a character segment memory 7. Thus, the character is segmented and it might be segmented in error depending on the setting way of a constant or remarkable variation of the character size. Then a character propriety decision section 9 checks for the erroneous character segmentation. As the result of elimination of the surrounding space, the width of the segmented picture is narrower than the line width and the length is too long to the width, then it is possible to include >=2 characters in the segmented picture, then a command is given to an address command section 6 so that the minimum value detecting range is matched to the position corresponding to the estimated character number of the present segmented picture.
