The work table for a guillotine shear has a plate support system comprising a chain of movable components along the cutting edge. These press the strip of plate to be cut off with a set force against the upper knife. - The pressure exerted on cutting is converted into a much smaller return pressure. Thus the chain and the strip of plate cut off move with the top knife. The chain components can be arranged to hinge on a series of vertical hydraulic rams.
