PURPOSE:To make it possible to extract an aromatic amine with improved phase separation and a high distribution ratio for the aromatic amine, by extracting the aromatic amine from an aqueous solution, etc. containing the aromatic amine with an extractant consisting essentially of tetrahydrofuran. CONSTITUTION:An extractant consisting essentially of tetrahydrofuran is added to an aqueous solution or aqueous suspension (extraction feed) containing an aromatic amine and preferably 5-50pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. water in the extraction feed, NH3 and/or electrolyte present therein at 0.5-5 wtight ratio between the extractant and extraction feed to extract the aromatic amine at 10-100 deg.C, and the resultant aromatic amine is washed with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, etc. to reduce remarkably an ammonium halide in the extract, etc. The resultant extract can be distilled, etc. to separate the aimed aromatic amine, e.g. phenylenediamine, scarcely causing coloration, e.g. blackening, even on storing in air. EFFECT:The extractant can be easily recovered by distillation, scarcely forming heavy materials. |
