Phenylalanine ammonia lyase enzyme producing microorganism - and enzyme used for producing aspartame intermediate L-phenyl-alanine

Microorganism (I) able to grow on a minimal essential medium contg. L-tyrosine as the carbon source is new. Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (II) is produced by cultivation of (I) under appropriate conditions. L-phenylalanine is prepd. by contacting (II) with trans-cinnamic acid and ammonia. - This may be of the genera Rhodotorula and Rhodosporidium subjected chemically induced mutation with e.g. nitrosog-guanidine, ethyl methanesulphonate, 5-bromouracil, hydroxylamine, nitrogen mustard or sulphur mustard. Mutants may also be obtd. by iradiation with U.V. or ionising radiation. USE/ADVANTAGE - L-phenylalanine is an intermediate for the artificial sweetener aspartame.
