In this housing (2), the wall (3) is provided with perforations (4) in the gripping region. On the inside of the wall is a body (5) with movable tongues (7) on which burl-like projections (6) are provided which can be pushed through the perforations. During non-use, the tongues are bent inwards and the projections are within the housing, so that the housing has a smooth, easily cleaned outer surface. When the instrument is used, a switching device actuates a splaying element (9) which presses the tongues against the inside of the wall (3), so that the projections (6) pass through the perforations and project from the housing on the outside. The effect is to produce a burled gripping surface which provides secure and pleasant holding of the instrument. <IMAGE>
