The invention relates to a device and a process for melting and conveying plasticated material. The invention comprises a screw conveyor with a shaft having one or more helical screw flights which rotate in the bore of the barrel of an extruder. At a point in the screw channel downstream of which the molten material is distributed into the remaining solid layer, a groove is located in the shaft of the screw, through which the semi-molten or agglomerated material is diverted by a projection extending through the channel of the screw as far as the groove. The additional heat transferred to the material on account of the improved distribution of the molten and solid material resulting during the diversion of the semi-molten material through the groove and back into the screw channel improves the quality of the material processed.
